The architecture of IT solutions used in the implementation of a given financial service is one of the key factors determining its success. Architecture serves as a foundation, which is why it requires particularly high competence—both in terms of knowledge and experience—to create. New solutions and technologies are appearing on the market all the time. Most of them will soon be obsolete. Only a few of them will make a more lasting presence in the market.
It is clear that no service offered commercially to customers should be based on technologies and solutions that prove to be short-lived. The cost of replacing the architecture, including both direct (financial) and indirect (like reputational) costs, might be so high that it makes you question the viability of the entire service.
We have been working for the financial industry for three decades and we know that nobody likes to endlessly replace technology and rebuild architecture. A modern enterprise in the financial industry should focus on the business objectives of its services and not on the myriad IT technologies – that often contradict each other.
When designing the architecture of an IT solution, we identify the technologies required to develop a business service based on knowledge, practical experience and – let’s be honest – intuition. That’s right – business before technology.
Above all, we see ourselves as a ‘diversification provider’. We focus on enabling our customers’ modern enterprises to focus on their own development without neglecting the stability of the solution. This means that diversification of systems is necessary so that the best solutions are used in each area of the company’s operations. It involves the right combination of stable, mature systems that have been in place for years and modern solutions that provide a real competitive advantage in today’s business environment.
We are against changes to stable, warmed-up systems just for the sake of ‘IT-modernization’. Upgrading only makes sense when it provides a real competitive advantage perceived by the end customer. IT in financial institutions should serve as a tool, not an end goal in itself.
We believe that no institution in the financial market should be dependent on a single supplier. We know how much this can hinder the development of an enterprise. That is why we focus on ‘delivering diversification’ by building solution architectures in such a way that our clients enjoy freedom and have the opportunity to focus on the real development of their own business
Problems in the broad field of security are becoming more apparent every year. A top-tier financial product, particularly one of such caliber must ensure flawless security across at least three fundamental areas:
● Protection against data or system leakage
● Protection against breaches of data and system integrity
● Protection against system unavailability
In reality, there are many more areas related to these problems: the DORA regulations, as well as the relevant iSO regulations or finally OWASP addresses some of these problems to varying degrees.
It is also important to remember that the security of a modern system is not only about the data but also about the system itself, including the algorithms and intellectual property “contained” within it. Taking this into account, the system should be created according to appropriate standards and should be operated in an equally secure manner. Even the most secure software will be insanely dangerous in an unsecure cloud or runtime environment. And vice versa: a secure cloud will not fix the problems caused by poorly written software.
Moreover, the very notion of ‘writing software’ includes, after all, not only the physical creation of source code but also the use of various types of libraries and external technologies (including open-source), the implementation of various types of CI/CD solutions.
We help our customers solve their security problems through a holistic, proven engineering approach. ‘We “decipher” the mysterious abbreviations operating in the industry and translate them into concrete actions. Security is not just about spectacular penetration tests, but above all a set of concrete procedures and solutions built up over years with a proven track record.
We offer our customers the development of appropriate security policies at all necessary levels, audits of their implementation, mapping of the requirements of all relevant ISO, OWASP, DORA regulations, and training in full scope and at virtually any level of sophistication. We are able to fully absorb the responsibilities associated with the security of a given business service (because, after all, it is the security of the business service in question and not some theoretical security of one piece of IT technology or another). Our aim is to enable the customer to focus on developing his or her business instead of recognising hundreds of purely technological concepts.
Modern IT systems usually demand high scalability, availability, and robust disaster recovery capabilities. All this is compounded by the issue of Business Continuity – a key requirement in many cases. To make matters worse, contemporary IT systems are heterogeneous and characterised by a multitude of technologies being used. As a result, a typical service provided to customers by companies in the financial industry runs on an extremely complex runtime environment.
This environment can consist of physical machines (which are becoming increasingly rare), virtual machines, containers as well as SaaS and FaaS solutions. As if this were not enough, the runtime environment never exists on its own solely as a production environment – there are also test environments, pre-production environments, and so on.
One can get lost in this maze of technologies. Also, regulatory requirements – including security and continuity of business can be challenging.
We believe that for any company in the financial industry, the issues raised above are not the heart of the matter. Indeed, the focus should be on the development of financial services. Technology is merely a tool and not an aim in itself.
And this is why we offer our clients a full range of services related to the design of runtime environments, audits of existing ones – practically in any technology. When carrying out this work, we pay attention to what is most important: security – including operational security, adequate continuity of business, high scalability and availability, reliable archiving or backup mechanisms – all aimed at properly managing the multitude of risks that may arise in this area.
We have qualified engineers with powerful experience, but also with a legal background – particularly where IT intersects with regulatory requirements in relevant markets.
The financial industry – like no other industry – navigates a veritable thicket of regulatory requirements. As IT has become a vital foundation of financial services – many of these regulations involve IT. This, in turn, means that it is impossible to fulfil the regulatory requirements without an in-depth knowledge of the technology.
Unfortunately, in a typical case, this is acts as a barrier to growth for a bank or any other financial institution: instead of growing the business, the company’s efforts are focused on mapping regulatory requirements onto complex technological aspects.
Our aim is to take this kind of problem off our clients’ shoulders. We want our clients to be able to focus on developing their business while we competently deal with compliance issues.
We are able to perform a full-scale audit and carry out all work – including design and documentation work – and concretely indicate the best methods of achieving compliance with practically all regulations at the interface of IT, law and financial services. In particular, we have extensive knowledge and practice of the GDRP, but also of DORA – both in the context of the EU market and the Swiss market.
In doing so, we focus on practical, proven solutions rather than ‘theoretical audits’. We provide concrete, including engineering, knowledge in the form of practical ideas and solutions on how to achieve regulatory compliance without paralysing the logic of the financial service in question and, moreover, enabling its further development. We would like to simplify compliance issues as much as possible.
So we are not a competitor of companies/systems that handle compliance. We simply fit into these mechanisms by providing highly specialised support.
As practice shows, correctly implemented regulatory requirements can even be beneficial for the development of an enterprise. Provided, of course, that the manner in which they are implemented has been determined by professionals with adequate practice.
In today’s fast-moving world, financial services and especially payment services, are its lifeblood. Increasing globalisation, coupled with the growing demands of end users, means that instant payments – which did not really exist 30 years ago – are now a serious part of the market. Moreover, the number of executed transactions is growing intensively. With them come increasing demands on scalability, performance and, above all, on the security of systems.
On the other hand, market developments are giving rise to new solutions (for example SEPA Instant) and existing ones (SEPA, SWIFT, Visa/Mastercard payment systems, contactless payments). This includes the emergence of new billing solutions, new reconciliation methods, etc.
Payment systems, especially the so-called Payment Hubs, have always been the central axis around which we have built our competences. Due to the huge number of sources and recipients of transactions, the complexity of the systems, and the performance requirements, this area of the market has always been of particular interest to us.
We have extensive knowledge and experience in virtually all payment systems, both on the back office side – their settlement – as well as on the purely transactional side (including specialised software running on payment authorisation terminals from all key manufacturers and, of course, various solutions for mobile payments).
We have built our knowledge and experience in this area not in a theoretical sense, but as practitioners. Throughout the years, we have built just such solutions for the most demanding companies in the financial market. We are proud of our many years of uninterrupted cooperation with them proving our unique approach to their business.
We would like to share with you our practical knowledge and concrete experience in the implementation of high-performance payment solutions. This includes expertise on both the sender side (mass payments) and the receiver side (mass collection), as well as in processing transactions and data at every stage, with a special focus on mobile solutions and payment card authorisation terminals.
In today’s financial services, what we once called “efficiency” has greatly expanded its definition. Nowadays, the focus of every modern enterprise is not only on ensuring adequate processing speed but also on ensuring scalability of services, availability, and maximum continuity of business. This often translates into MTBF, MTTR.
Complex IT solutions may generate various risks affecting these parameters, as so-called ‘failures’ can encompass a wide range of scenarios: from security breaches and hardware failures to software errors, and an infinite range of human errors. There are also more subtle 'failures’ related to the effectiveness of the financial service, which translate into reputational risks.
We have powerful, battle-tested experience in optimising financial services and the IT systems that support them at virtually every level. This includes the typical (and virtually always necessary) optimisation of application performance, spanning from the execution of development and application management processes to the performance of runtime environments.
Interestingly, in the mathematical world of IT, few parameters are as easily recordable as time. Most parameters observed by end customers are subjective, but time is objective. This means that the performance of a service or system can be objectively measured and compared, as long as you know how to do it effectively.
We have extensive experience in accurately measuring performance, analysing the results obtained and, above all, we possess unique engineering expertise to provide our clients with specific, proven techniques and solutions. This allows our customers to focus on their own business goals and the development of their services in a business sense, leaving the technological aspect to us.
Moreover, as the very definition of the word ‘optimisation’ implies, we are able to operate in already existing environments. We can build coherent optimisation policies covering all IT aspects of a running solution based on proven methods, minimising any associated risks.
Implementing innovation is always associated with risk. It is impossible to develop a company intensively without a certain level of uncertainty. But what is obvious, it is worth minimising it.
On the other hand, the majority of financial enterprises have stable and mature IT solutions – practically free of any particular risks, but at the same time without the possibility of creating innovative services and developing the enterprise more dynamically.
But does it always have to be the case that growth requires risky (yet innovative) IT solutions? We think not. We believe that in the financial industry, the end customer pays for the innovation and reliability of the financial service, not for innovative but risky IT technology. Unless it provides him with real benefits radically beyond the risks he observes.
An important challenge in such situations is correctly creating or locating the IT system where the business logic of the new services should be implemented. The choice of this location is of colossal importance, as it has a key impact on the risks associated with IT system development.
For many years we have been involved in implementing highly specialised and business-intensive financial services for the most demanding customers. We see our role as removing or minimising IT risk so that our client can focus on the business development of the service.
We offer a full range of consultancy for the implementation innovations – both in the area of financial products/services and in the procedures for creating, developing, testing and maintaining them. We enable a business to develop towards innovation without needing to abandon proven and stable systems. In other words, we facilitate the adoption of the latest technology without disregarding existing technologies.
Our focus is on business innovation in terms of the service itself, viewing IT as a useful tool. It is worth noting that this tool, when properly used, can provide a company with a competitive advantage. These are the exact advantages we cultivate- leveraging appropriately selected and proven technology supported by decades of knowledge gathering and experience building.
The merger of companies naturally raises a host of issues relating to the merging or cooperating entities. We have been involved in this type of operation for over 30 years, providing our clients with knowledge and concrete solutions.
Typically, two strategies are adopted in such cases: either the IT systems of the merged companies continue to operate independently, or a single system is selected to serve both entities. Of course, there are also hybrid solutions, especially since such decisions are made not in the context of a single system, but rather in relation to dozens (sometimes hundreds) of different IT solutions.
Regardless of the strategy chosen, it is crucial to accurately inventory the systems within the merging companies. This encompasses the functional aspects, often tied to customer service methods, and the IT infrastructure itself. It is necessary to inventory the software in terms of technology used, interfaces in use, databases involved, architecture, as well as security, high availability (HA) solutions, disaster recovery (DR) measures, and the maintenance processes including upgrades, etc.
We have been addressing this type of problem for years. A thorough knowledge-based inventory assesses IT systems and provides a clear indication of the superiority of one system over another in specific areas of comparison.
Based on this assessment, a scenario can be chosen: maintaining both systems with integrated functionality, or selecting one system over another (with variations possible, as discussed below).
In the first scenario, the aforementioned inventory serves as an excellent foundation for constructing an integration system that facilitates, in a typical case, a two-way exchange of data between these systems. Typically, such integration layers often incorporate business logic or business intelligence solutions, enabling comprehensive enterprise oversight from a single interface.
In such a scenario, nothing changes from the enterprise customers’ perspective – they continue to be stably served by the systems and procedures they are accustomed to. After all, the management of the merged company has access to synthetic and analytical data in one place, regardless of the source system.
Here, too, we provide our customers with full professional support in building such efficient solutions.
In the second scenario, it is necessary to feed the selected system with data from the terminated system. In this case, it is necessary to prepare (at minimum) an appropriate data mapping.
We have powerful knowledge and experience in this area, accumulated in many projects of this type. This is important because often the choice of this scenario is preceded by the use of scenario one during the transition phase. The systems operate independently for some time, with integration between them, to eventually migrate the data and the entire process to a single system.
Of course, each case is different. The experience we have gained is only a starting point. We carefully examine each case because each situation is unique. For example, on more than one occasion, we have conducted integration implementations in which two ‘dying’ systems were migrated to a third system – one chosen completely from scratch. It turned out that the new challenges faced by the merged company were better addressed with an entirely new system. This is an interesting hybrid of the scenarios indicated above – all the more so as another approach was still being used during the transition period.
